The Ultimate Guide to ADA-Compliant Braille and 2.5D Tactile Signage
Everything signmakers need to know about spherical drop cure, micrometer calibration, and elevator compliance with LED-UV clear varnish.
The Ultimate Guide to ADA-Compliant Braille and 2.5D Tactile Signage
Architectural wayfinding, tactile room identifiers, and elevator signage represent some of the highest-margin opportunities in modern wide-format printing. While a standard flat vinyl sign might sell for €25, a code-compliant tactile sign with embossed letters and spherical Braille dots commands €95 to €180.
However, producing tactile signage on UV flatbed printers (such as Roland VersaOBJECT, Mimaki UJF, swissQprint, or Canon Arizona) requires strict adherence to physical height standards.
The Legal Standards: US ADA & EU NEN-EN 81-70
Signmakers must respect dimensional tolerances specified by accessibility laws:
- Dot Base Diameter: 1.5 mm to 1.6 mm.
- Dot Height: 0.6 mm to 0.9 mm.
- Dot Shape: Spherical dome (not cylindrical or flat-topped).
- Raised Character Height: Minimum 0.8 mm (1/32 inch).
- Character Contrast: Minimum 70% light reflectance value (LRV) contrast against the background plate.
Failing an architectural inspection because Braille dots are 0.4mm instead of 0.6mm means discarding entire batches of expensive acrylic plates.
Why LED-UV Varnish is the Modern Standard
Traditionally, shops had to drill tiny holes into acrylic plates using CNC routers and physically press plastic or metal Raster® beads into each hole by hand. This was excruciatingly slow.
With modern multi-pass LED-UV printing:
- An opaque white ink base is deposited.
- High-viscosity clear UV varnish is printed in multiple stacked micro-passes (typically 8 to 16 passes).
- The LED lamp power is modulated to allow the ink droplets to settle into smooth spherical domes before curing.
The 16-Step Micrometer Calibration Chart
Every printer model, printhead condition, and varnish ink formulation cures at a slightly different micron thickness per pass.
Printasy UV Studio solves this with the 16-Step Micrometer Calibration Chart:
- Print our standardized 16-step test wedge onto your standard acrylic substrate.
- Measure each step using an inexpensive digital micrometer.
- Enter your readings into the Printasy 2.5D tool.
- Printasy computes the exact mathematical cure curve required to guarantee 0.65mm dot height on your specific machine.
AccuBraille™ Automated Translation
Manually searching for Braille dot patterns in typography books introduces human transcription errors.
With AccuBraille™:
- Simply type standard room names or elevator numbers in Dutch, English, French, or German.
- AccuBraille automatically translates text into certified Grade 1 or contracted Grade 2 Braille.
- Exact dot spacing, inter-cell distances, and spherical drop profiles are generated automatically.
